Dear colleagues,

Please spread the following vacancy for a fully paid PhD position on sustainable forest management at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Thank you!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you interested in European forest management? Do you want to develop and apply spatial modelling approaches to identify pathways to more sustainable forest use?

This PhD position aims at developing novel forest and land management scenarios to assess trade-offs and synergies between contrasting change scenarios. The tools you will design build upon spatial land-system models and optimization approaches, tailored to the forest management sector for which so such tools are largely missing across broad spatial scales. You will develop a spatially explicit approach that can represent forest-management patterns and changes therein, and allows for a spatially explicit analysis of their socio-ecological impacts. You will also contribute to identifying and co-designing pathways towards more sustainable forest management in alignment with EU forest policies and targets. The PhD work will contribute to the success of a EU HorizonEurope project as well as to the analysis of sustainability solutions and the identification of leverage points for transformation.

Your duties

  * conduct high quality research and publish results in academic journals and a PhD thesis
  * conduct literature review, design modelling approaches, conduct data analysis, and perform simulation studies
  * contribute to reporting and dissemination within a HorizonEurope project
  * collaborate within and outside the institute with experts in the field
  * contribute to teaching, especially by supervising MSc thesis projects
REQUIREMENTS

  * MSc degree in environmental sciences, (landscape) ecology, (physical) geography, or another relevant programme with proven knowledge of interdisciplinary approaches
  * knowledge of and experience with quantitative (spatial) methods as well as land-system models
  *   very good writing skills
  * very good command of English (speaking and writing)

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?
A challenging position in a socially involved organization. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts €2,434 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to €3,111 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a duration of 4 years.
Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

  * a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment, 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus, solid pension scheme (ABP)
