I am writing to let you know that we are currently looking for post-doctoral research associate at the National Institute of Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville to work on a project aimed at evaluating various sources of ground, airborne and spaceborne LiDAR data to improve canopy height and forest structure mapping in southeastern mixed hardwood forests. The postdoc will work closely with Cherokee National Forest to develop stand boundaries that can be used to produce high resolution maps of species groups and other forest attributes needed to improve stand exam protocols used on the forest. Work will also involve using historical LiDAR to evaluate forest structure change after several prescribed burns and to explore potential for using point clouds to improve the precision of USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plot locations. This is a wonderful opportunity for a recent PhD to creatively work with Forest Service RD and National Forest Systems (NFS) partners to foster use of new 3D point clouds for operational forest inventory applications.
