Postdoctoral Position in Transient and Multi-messenger Astronomy Data Science

Applications are now being accepted for postdoctoral research positions as part of the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center<https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/> (HEASARC) and Time-domain Astronomy Coordination Hub (TACH) in the fields of transient and/or multi-messenger astronomy at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position consists of a postdoctoral appointment in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's (UMBC) Center for Space Sciences and Technology (CSST)<https://csst.umbc.edu/>, funded by NASA through the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Science and Technology II (CRESST II)<https://cresst2.umd.edu/>.

Successful applicants will join HEASARC/TACH and have a central role in shaping Goddard's multi-messenger science output. They will contribute to the development and operation of the General Coordinates Network (GCN), the next generation transient alert system built upon the legacy of the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network. This position includes approximately 30% of the applicant's time to devote to their own research projects, which we encourage to be aligned with the science topics enabled by TACH and data from Goddard supported missions. Applicants should have a strong astronomy research track record and deep expertise in the technical disciplines of full-stack software development, data visualization, React, TypeScript, and Python. Experience in Apache Kafka and cloud computing would also be beneficial.

GSFC is home to over 100 Ph.D. astronomers, including project teams for Swift, Fermi, NICER, NuSTAR, TESS, JWST, BurstCube, and Roman, as well as ample computational resources. GSFC is also a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. Through the Joint Space-Science Institute (JSI), GSFC is a partner in the Zwicky Transient Facility project. The successful applicants will also have the opportunity to apply for time on 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope in Happy Jack, AZ.

The positions are for two years, renewable for a third year upon mutual agreement. The nominal starting date is Spring 2022, but alternate dates are possible depending on availability. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field by the date of appointment. All faculty, students, and staff who are employed by UMBC through CRESST II are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of full vaccination will be required before the start of employment.

The position will remain available until filled. Completed applications received by Friday, April 8, 2022, will receive full consideration. Candidates should provide a cover letter, CV (including publication list), and a 3-page statement of research interests. Short-listed candidates will be asked to supply three letters of reference at a later date. All application materials and inquiries should be emailed directly to Ms. Katherine McKee (katherine.s.mckee at nasa.gov<mailto:katherine.s.mckee at nasa.gov>).

Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications. For more information about the proposed research, contact Dr. Judith Racusin (Judith.racusin at nasa.gov<mailto:Judith.racusin at nasa.gov>). For information on CRESST II or UMBC, contact Dr. Don Engel (donengel at umbc.edu<mailto:donengel at umbc.edu>). UMBC is committed to inclusive excellence and innovation and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. The TACH project and NASA/GSFC are committed to building a diverse group and encourage applications from women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans.
