The Environmental Assessment Program<http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/eap/index.html> within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Freshwater Fish Contaminant Monitoring Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 3)<https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/washington/jobs/3452039/freshwater-fish-contaminant-monitoring-lead-natural-resource-scientist-3> position. In this role, you work towards an Ecology priority of preventing and reducing toxic threats. You will be responsible for managing the Freshwater Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program (FFCMP). The FFCMP evaluates toxic contaminant levels in freshwater fish statewide and reports results annually. Primary components of the program include exploratory monitoring and trend monitoring. The data are used to evaluate the need for more detailed fish tissue surveys, 303(d) listings, and contaminant trends over time.

What you will do:

*        Define the FFCMP monitoring study, including writing project plans, selecting monitoring parameters, monitoring techniques, and defining study areas.

*        Lead and mentor other professional staff assigned to the project including training on appropriate technical methods, field and monitoring procedures, quality assurance procedures, and office procedures.

*        Prepare quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and scientific reports. Works closely with analytical laboratories to coordinate analysis of environmental samples including developing Request for Proposals for externally contracted analyses and work.

*        Conduct surveys, analyze and record conditions for collection of environmental samples for toxics chemical analysis.

*        Conduct statistical analysis and quality assurance review of environmental data.  Use various software programs for data analysis (spreadsheets and statistics), and report preparation (word processing).

*        Write the draft and final technical reports. External experts typically review draft reports.

*        Defend scientific conclusions in legal setting, if the report's conclusions are challenged on their technical merit.

*        Communicate and present sampling results to partners, public, industry, and other agencies in an understandable manner.

*        Manage large datasets, assist with data reduction, and oversee entry of project data into Ecology's EIM System.
