Bucknell University is seeking an Instrumentation Director to interact with
students, faculty, and staff in support of educational and research
projects that involve chromatography and mass spectrometry. Based in the
Department of Chemistry, this position interfaces with individuals across
Bucknell’s campus and from other institutions in our region. The Chemistry
Department maintains a strong culture of teaching and research excellence
where both activities are student-centered. We seek an individual who is
aligned with our goals of educating students through experiential learning
and maintaining a high level of departmental research productivity through
managing our substantial chemical analysis equipment assets.

Job Duties:
- operate, maintain, and manage the usage of chromatography and mass
spectrometry research instruments in the Chemistry Department with minimal
supervision
- proactively ensure high uptimes within specified performance for
departmental research instrumentation, particularly with chromatography and
mass spectrometry equipment
- establish standard practices and norms for use and upkeep of
chromatography and mass spectrometry instruments by students, faculty, and
staff in order to enable consistent, research-grade measurements and
maximize instrument lifetime
- support faculty/student research projects that involve the use of
departmental instrumentation and provide advice to users on instrument
usage in accordance with their project
- perform and/or mentor users on analytical method development and data
interpretation as needed in support of research and experiential learning
- train users (students, facultyand staff) on the use of chromatography and
MS instruments for research, teaching, and experiential learning
applications
- execute and/or arrange for service and repair of instruments as needed
and maintain a working relationship with representatives from various
vendors
- occasionally conduct analysis of submitted samples
- collaborate with faculty on developing and delivering curricula that
leverage advanced instrumentation, including the use of instruments during
teaching laboratory sessions
- establish and execute a data management plan for chromatography and mass
spectrometry instruments, including records of instrument performance,
maintenance, and updates
- facilitate occasional access to instrumentation for researchers from
other institutions in the region
- maintain availability to work with students and faculty during
conventional work hours
- ensure a safe work environment in instrumentation laboratories, including
safety protocols for the use of chromatography and mass spectrometry
instrumentation

Additional Responsibilities and Development Opportunities:
- support and maintain other analytical instruments in the Department of
Chemistry, as needed
- collaborate on grant-seeking to acquire and enhance departmental
instrumentation
- engage with opportunities to attend meetings, workshops, and/or
short-courses applicable to instrument maintenance, method development,
relevant new techniques, data analysis, and professional development

Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in chemistry (or related field) plus 2 years of
relevant experience
● Experience with the fundamental principles, operation, and maintenance of
liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and/or gas
chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instruments
● Willingness to proactively engage in professional development and
learning new skills
● Strong organizational abilities
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills
● Enthusiasm for engaging with Bucknell’s commitment to teaching, learning,
and scholarship
● Ability to foster a productive and cooperative environment with the goal
of providing exceptional educational opportunities through experiential
learning
● Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community of faculty, lab
directors, students, and staff.
● Ability to read and understand chemical safety and hygiene plans

Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience with high-resolution Agilent LC/Q-ToF and/or ThermoFisher
Scientific LC/Orbitrap, Advion CMS, Agilent GC/MS, Agilent HPLC, and
Agilent GC instruments and software packages
● Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in chemistry or a related
discipline
● Experience with advanced mass spectrometry data analysis, including
open-source platforms
● Experience with additional analytical instruments and techniques (e.g.,
UV-Visible spectrophotometry, fluorescence, FT-IR spectroscopy, circular
dichroism, autotitrators)
● Facility with electronic test equipment, power tools, and hand tools

Physical Demands:
This position may involve lifting objects of 25 lbs, and may occasionally
involve lifting objects weighing 50 lbs.

Work Type:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt, benefits eligible position.

Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. It is the seat of Union
County, which has about 44,000 residents.

The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn
State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is within a three-hour drive of New
York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The cost of living is low compared to that of major U.S. cities and
