*Research Lab Specialist, Molecular Biogeochemistry, University of
Michigan *

The Kharbush lab (Microbial and Molecular Biogeochemistry) is looking for a
full-time laboratory specialist/technician, in the Department of Earth and
Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Prior
experience with stable isotope research and instrumentation is a plus.
Start date is flexible, but prefer someone who can start in April or May of
this year. Please find more details below, and the application here:
https://careers.umich.edu/job_detail/212818/research-lab-specialist. We
will begin reviewing applications on *March 10*, but the position will
remain open until filled.
Ann Arbor is a lovely college town community with great schools,
restaurants, and plenty of outdoor activities, and is only 30-40 minutes

Please contact Jenan Kharbush (jenanjk at umich.edu) with any questions, and
forward to anyone you think may be interested!

*Position description*: The laboratory specialist will assist with research
projects in molecular biogeochemistry, and specifically the study of amino
acids and other nitrogen-containing biomarkers via compound-specific
isotope analysis. Primary responsibilities will include the preparation and
analysis of water, sediment, and culture samples in the lab, maintaining
and running our new GC-IRMS system, and data entry, processing, and
visualization. They will help with coordinating projects and participate in
research group projects, and will have the opportunity to collaborate on
conceptual project design, experimental approaches, methods development, as
well as assist with publications and proposals. A willingness to learn and
develop new methods and techniques, as well as mentor students and other
lab users in best practices for stable isotope applications in microbial
ecology and biogeochemistry, is considered a plus for this position. *At
minimum*, candidates should hold a B.S./B.A. degree in engineering,
geochemistry, geoscience, analytical chemistry, physics, or a related
field, with lab experience in detailed, high-quality biogeochemical or
chemical analysis of samples, including a demonstrated ability for
independent troubleshooting. This lab experience should include the
operation and/or maintenance of modern instruments for quantitative
chemical, isotopic, and/or geological analysis.

*Salary:* Commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a
full benefits package. Salary range at the Associate level is $40,000 -
$50,000, and $46,400-$58,000 at the intermediate level.

*Desired but not required qualifications: * Experience working in a stable
isotope lab and stable isotope applications, experience running and/or
maintaining analytical instruments, such as LC-MS, GC-MS or GC-IRMS
instruments, and experience with R or Matlab. Experience with the operation
and maintenance of any of the following: elemental analyzer, isotope ratio
mass spectrometer coupled to multiple peripheral systems (such as elemental
analyzer, trace gas concentrator, gas chromatograph), mass spectrometers,
liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. MS
degree/Ph.D. in engineering, geochemistry, geoscience, analytical
chemistry, physics, or a related field.

The University of Michigan, named after Michigamaa (“Great Water” in
Ojibwe), occupies the traditional territory stewarded by the Anishinaabe.
This land was ceded through the Treaty of Fort Meigs by the
Anishinaabeg—the Three Fires People—Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa) and
Bodewadimi (Potawatomi). Through these words their current and ancestral
ties to the land and to the University are acknowledged.
