[ES_JOBS_NET] Summer 2022 REU opportunity: Stream Organic Matter Data Science at the University of Nevada Reno

We have an opening for a research experience for undergraduate (REU)
student to join the Blaszczak lab at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)
during the summer of 2022 (10 weeks from May – August, with flexibility
around specific dates) to conduct mentored research on dissolved organic
matter (DOM) cycling in streams across the U.S. with a specific focus on
data visualization. This project is in collaboration with Jacob Hosen at
Purdue University, and we will work with the student to develop and conduct
their own research projects and to create interactive, data-rich web
visualizations that convey the findings of their research. There will also
be opportunities to collect stream water samples from urban streams near
the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and streams in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The REU student will have housing on UNR’s campus and will work closely
with Joanna Blaszczak and postdoc Heili Lowman at UNR along with remote
supervision by Jacob Hosen and postdoc Tingyu Hou at Purdue University.
This position is supported by the National Science Foundation’s Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and the REU student will
receive a stipend ($6000) and a meal plan and have their research and
research-related travel expenses covered for the summer.

Applicants must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents, currently enrolled
at a university and graduating no sooner than December 2022. We encourage
applications from underrepresented groups in science, veterans, persons
with disabilities, first generation college students, financially
disadvantaged students, and students from colleges with limited research
opportunities. Previous experience with data analysis and visualization
programs such as Microsoft Excel, R/RStudio, Python, or MATLAB is
advantageous but not required (just need to have an interest in learning to
code!).
