Research Scientist position in GEOS model development to understand High
Mountain Asia forecast models

The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II (GESTAR II)
consortium at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) invites
applications for a research position in the Global Modeling and
Assimilation Office (GMAO) (Code 610.1) at GSFC. The office works to
maximize the impact of satellite observations in climate, weather and
atmospheric composition prediction using comprehensive global models and
data assimilation. To achieve this goal, the GMAO develops models and
assimilation systems, generates products to support NASA instrument teams
and the NASA Earth science program, and undertakes scientific research to
inform system development pathways.GMAO's long-term goal is an integrated
Earth system model and assimilation system that treats the individual
components in a more coupled and interactive manner.

The successful candidate will work to understand how model initial
conditions, particularly snow cover, and model characteristics impact
GEOS-S2S (Goddard Earth Observing System Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction
System) forecast performance over High Mountain Asia, the Himalayan
forelands and India.

The researcher will build on previous work to integrate MODIS snow cover
fraction assimilation within GEOS Land Data Assimilation System (GEOSldas).
They will perform a suite of experiments to examine the impact of improved
snow cover initial conditions on seasonal prediction of hydrometeorological
variables within the GEOS-S2S system. In addition to model development and
validation, responsibilities include leading or contributing to the
publication of peer-reviewed scientific articles and active participation
in GMAO Land Processes Group, GMAO S2S Group, and NASA’s Understanding High
Mountain Asia Research Team.

The researcher will join the GESTAR II Consortium which supports over 120
researchers based primarily at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).
GESTAR II researchers work to create extensive opportunities for
breakthroughs in earth and atmospheric science research, carrying out
observational, experimental and theoretical research in support of NASA
strategic Earth Science mission objectives.

Goddard’s Earth Science Division is home to about 200 civil servants and
over 1200 collaborating researchers and support personnel dedicated to
studying the Earth as an integrated system that includes the atmosphere,
oceans, biosphere, cryosphere, and geosphere. The Division operates as a
component of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate that collaborate on
interdisciplinary research with the Astrophysics Science, Heliophysics
Science, and Solar System Exploration Divisions.

Required knowledge and skills:

   -

PhD in Hydrology, Atmospheric Sciences or Earth Sciences related fields,
with direct experience with data assimilation systems.
   -

A demonstrated ability to contribute to team-focused developments of
   large, complex data assimilation systems.
   -

Excellent quantitative, computational, and programming skills (including
Fortran, MATLAB or Python, & git or other software version control).
   -

A strong ability to think critically and actively engage with a wide
   range of researchers.
   -

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

This position is envisioned as a postdoctoral researcher position, but the
title is flexible given candidate qualifications.

How to apply:

Candidates should provide a cover letter, three page statement of research
interests and CV (including publication list). Short-listed candidates will
be asked to supply three letters of reference at a later date. All
materials and inquiries should be sent by email Subject line: Task 144:
Research Scientist position to: Halley Thompson halleyt at umbc.edu.

Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and
qualifications. The GESTAR II consortium and NASA/GSFC are committed to
building a diverse research community and encourages applications from
women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities and
veterans. All GESTAR II institutions are Affirmative Action, Equal
Opportunity Employers.

This posting will remain open until 8/12/22. The nominal starting date is early
fall, but alternate dates are possible depending on availability.

This position is a one-year contract, renewable depending upon performance
