Subject: [FellowsCareers] Climate Solution Scientist roles at Spark Climate

There are several great roles now open at Spark Climate Solutions, a new
non-profit focusing on building ecosystems around emerging/neglected S&T
solutions in climate. These would be a good fit for a former fellow (note
there are both Associate and Senior roles). More than the messenger here,
so feel free to contact me for more information.

*Position Summary*

Spark Climate Solutions is seeking scientific experts to join our team to
identify and analyze emerging areas for novel climate solutions and to
develop broad-based intervention strategies to support the growth of these
emerging fields. Our ideal candidates are on a continuing journey of
scientific exploration, driven by the desire to help repair the climate.

We’re hiring 2-3 Associate Scientists and 1-2 Senior Scientists, each
position is full-time. Depending on projects and availability, some roles
may also be fixed-term.

We are looking for scientists with deep expertise in biology, engineering,
chemistry, geology, materials science, biochemistry, atmospheric science,
physics or related fields which they have applied to climate solutions
areas, including the following:

   -

Methane Emissions Reduction (enteric fermentation, rice, landfills)
   -

   Methane Removal / Oxidation approaches
   -

Reduction and mitigation of other non-CO₂ pollutants, including
hydrogen, black carbon, nitrous oxide, HFCs, and VOCs
   -

Natural system feedbacks and their resulting carbon dioxide, methane,
and nitrous oxide emissions, including from wetlands, forests, permafrost,
   rivers, and lakes
   -

   Carbon Dioxide Removal

Our ideal candidates:

   -

Follow the peer-reviewed literature to understand past and current
frontier science and technological developments in key climate solutions
   fields.
   -

Proactively reach out to researchers and technologists to explore key
unknowns, develop and propose hypotheses, and then find ways to test them.
   -

Are deeply comfortable with some combination of relevant scientific
fields as noted above, and can quickly evaluate the strengths, weaknesses,
and untested potential of different technical and scientific approaches to
   climate challenges.
   -

Delight in the challenge of complex systems, including the ability to
move comfortably among fundamental science, technological
potentials/limits, and broader social and policy implications.
   -

Fully understand that there’s always more to learn, and enjoy the
process of seeking to be continuously less wrong.
   -

Have considerable experience writing engaging scientific content for
   broader consumption.
   -

Have proven abilities of working collaboratively, effectively, and
efficiently in ways that prioritize and center empathy and equity.

As a member of a small team, you will be at the center of the action and
pivotal to our success as Spark moves from concept to impact, with front
row exposure to emerging climate fields and leading scientists and
philanthropists.
*Responsibilities*

Scientists will be responsible for:

   -

Researching and authoring roadmaps for overall solutions ecosystems
including well-researched and supported recommendations for RD&D topics,
policy changes, and public communication efforts.
   -

Building relationships with science, policy, and philanthropic partners
to collaborate on roadmaps, research agendas, and granting opportunities.
   -

   Identifying new areas to pursue.

*Education and/or Experience*

Candidates for all of these roles must have the following:

   -

Deep comfort evaluating work in the areas listed above Ph.D. or Masters
(or equivalent academic and professional experience) in science or
   engineering is highly desirable.
   -

Experience independently running projects and complex worktracks in
research-heavy areas, in academia, consulting, or business environments
   -

Over 7 years (Associate Scientists) or over 12 years (Senior Scientists)
combined professional and research experience, inclusive of Ph.D.
   -

Proven ability to initiate independent projects and work across
   disciplines.
   -

Excellent written, speaking / presentation, and interpersonal
communication skills to engage effectively within the organization and with
   external collaborators / stakeholders.
   -

Insatiable drive to learn about the climate problem and help drive
   solutions.
   -

   Flexibility, creativity, and tenacity.
   -

   Fluency in English.

*Location*

As with all positions at Spark Climate Solutions, this will be 100% remote.
Employees can work anywhere within the United States, or internationally
with approval.
*Eligibility*

   -

Able to work as a W2 employee for a US non-profit.
   -

Availability during US Pacific time work day.
   -

Role is remote. Our center of gravity is in the SF Bay Area, with a
possible option (not requirement) of some in-person work later in 2022.

*Compensation*

These are all full-time positions with benefits. The salary range for
Associate Scientist is $110,000-150,000 / year. The salary range for Senior
Scientist $130,000-$180,000 / year. For exceptional candidates, we will
consider part-time roles with terms to be negotiated. In addition, Spark
Climate Solutions provides exceptional benefits including flexible PTO,
sick time, holidays, generous health insurance coverage, and full-covered
dental/vision/life insurance, and parental leave.
