*Job Description:*
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) is seeking a
Specialist GIS Technician\Cartographer for our Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) team within the Geologic Mapping Program. The Bureau is a
research division of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
(NMT) in Socorro, NM.
We are looking for a self-motivated individual that is passionate about
geoscience and geologic maps, has experience with GIS, and an interest in
cartographic concepts. Our GIS team collaborates with field geologists to
produce scientifically accurate GIS data. Cartographic and graphic design
principles are then used to create readable and pleasing geologic map
products that maintain scientific integrity. Communication skills in a team
environment are essential to accomplish these tasks, advance the program,
and improve our mapping methods. Applicants should have the ability to
problem-solve or discuss to come to a solution for issues related to
complex GIS and geologic concepts.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
· utilizing GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, Global Mapper, QGIS)
· QA/QC of Geology and GIS data
· developing layouts using graphic design software (e.g. Adobe
Creative Cloud)
· utilizing internet browsers for online research and access to
geologic resources
· utilizing office software such as word processing, spreadsheet,
database, and presentation applications (e.g. Microsoft Office)
· working with specialized hardware such as digitizing monitors,
scanners, plotters, etc.
· using Google Workspace including Gmail, Chat, Calendar, Drive
(e.g. Docs, Sheets, etc.)
· using Zoom for team meetings and collaboration on a regular basis
*Skills desired:*
· working knowledge of the steps and processes involved in producing
precise and accurate geologic maps, cross sections, correlations of map
units, and occasionally geologic figures
· basic technical and geologic editing
· graphic design or cartographic production
· understanding of relational geodatabases
· familiarity with the USGS Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) map
production standard
· detail oriented (e.g. data entry, line editing of geologic
reports, geologic review/editing, etc.)
· quick learner who can help improve and adapt to new and ever
evolving workflow methods
This position is supported by soft-money contracts, and the continuation of
the position is contingent on renewed contract awards for subsequent years.
However, this is a full time position including full benefits (annual
leave, sick leave, insurance, etc.) and an NMT tuition waiver for three
credits per semester.
*Education Requirements:*
A Bachelor's degree with an area of study in Geology or Earth Science is
required. A Master’s degree with an area of study in Geology, Earth
Science, or GIS is desired. GIS and graphic design software experience is
preferred, but can be acquired through on-the-job training.

professional geologic community, the general public, and decision-makers
