The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Mineral Deposit Database Project (USMIN) is compiling geospatial databases of the most important mines and mineral deposits of the United States. The USGS’ Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center in Denver Colorado has openings for term Physical Scientists to work on the project.

The term Physical Scientists will collaborate with Federal, State, and Tribal agencies to build two new databases required by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021: (1) for the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative, map and collect data for areas in the U.S. that contain mine waste to increase understanding of above-ground critical mineral resources in previously disturbed areas, and (2) for the Department of the Interior, build an inventory of abandoned non‐coal mine lands to help guide efforts to decommission, reclaim, respond to hazardous substances release on, and remediate abandoned mines in the U.S. Together, these tasks help address the need for domestic supplies of critical minerals, and the legacy of abandoned mines.

The ideal candidates will have strong skills in ArcGIS and Physical Sciences. Knowledge of geology and economic geology are helpful, but not essential. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences and superior academic achievement can apply for a GS-07 position, and those with a master’s degree can apply for a GS-09 position.

To apply: Further information, guidelines, and requirements are provided on the formal announcement at USA jobs. https://www.usajobs.gov/job/663433400 Applications close on 29 July, or when 100 applications have been received, whichever is soonest.

Further information related to the project is on the following website: https://www.usgs.gov/USMIN
