The University of South Alabama’s School of Marine and Environmental
Sciences is seeking to hire a Senior Research Laboratory Manager.
Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science
from an accredited institution approved and accepted by the University of
South Alabama and five years of progressively responsible research
laboratory experience, two years of which were in a supervisor capacity.
Master's degree preferred.

Functions: Provides day-to-day management and oversight for a common use
Analytical Laboratory in the School of Marine and Environmental Sciences;
processes or assists with processing analytical samples; assists with
training students, staff, and faculty in environmental analyses that
contribute to ongoing research and hands-on instructional learning to
complement classroom-based teaching; coordinates with multiple Principle
Investigators on various research projects; assists in developing research
proposals, monitoring budgets, and negotiating with vendors; prepares
reports and presents findings at conferences; selects, supervises, and
evaluates staff on research projects; develops lab protocols and serves as
Quality Control and Quality Assurance supervisor for lab; maintains complex
scientific analytical instrumentation (mass spec equipment) and
oceanographic field instruments (CTD and ADCPs); maintains familiarity and
knowledge of maintenance and operation of the following in support of the
facility: instruments for elemental chemical analysis of solid and liquid
samples (Costech CHNSO analyzer, LA-ICP-MS, ICP-MS/MS), determination of
nutrient content in soils and waters (Skalar Continuous Flow Nutrient
Analyzer), and analyzing inorganic and organic compounds in liquid, vapor,
and solid phases (Dionex Accelerated Solvent Extractor ASE350. Milestone
DMA80, GC-MS, laser ablation ICP-MS, Neptune XT MC-ICP-MS, UPLC-HRMS,
etc.); regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined
and additional hours as required; related duties as required.
