Job Title: Postdoctoral scientist: Grid electricity greenhouse gas emissions quantification
School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems
Northern Arizona University
Flagstaff, Arizona
Join an exciting Northern Arizona University research team (https://gurneylab.nau.edu/) in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona doing cutting-edge research on the carbon cycle and climate change. This postdoctoral position will perform research on quantification and analysis of fossil fuel CO2 emissions at fine space/time scales related to electricity consumption (Scope 2 emissions) in the US. This is an ongoing effort to incorporate Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions onto the Vulcan fossil fuel CO2 emissions platform (https://vulcan.rc.nau.edu/). The position intersects the disciplines of carbon cycle science, spatial analysis, electricity grid modeling, informatics, and emissions accounting.
Candidates must have received a PhD in a field related to position (e.g., Informatics, Civil Engineering, Ecological/Environmental Sciences) from an accredited college or university. The applicant will be expected to publish peer-reviewed journal articles and work in a team environment, effectively communicating with a range of physical and social scientists.
Necessary skills: knowledge of US electrical grid modeling, flow, and analysis, geospatial statistics, strong numerical analysis abilities, R/python programming. Desired skills: carbon accounting/footprinting experience, GIS experience.
Given the multidisciplinary nature of the research, a highly self-directed, creative and self-motivated individual is sought. The position is a fulltime appointment with an anticipated start date between 11/1/2022 and 3/1/2023. The appointment will be made initially for one year with possibility of extension for additional years. Salary range is $60,000-$75,000 dependent on experience, with associated University benefits.
