Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for an atmospheric modeling project to investigate how smoke from fires may affect clouds and climate by nucleating ice crystals.

The aim of the project is to produce numerical estimates of how ice nucleating particles (INP) in smoke contribute to the global budget of INP, using and developing a large-scale atmospheric model. We are interested in the relevant aerosol and cloud microphysics, and in chemical ageing of the aerosols. The position is to work in the research groups of Hamish Gordon and Ryan Sullivan, collaborating extensively within the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies at CMU and with national and international partners.

Applicants should have or be close to completing a PhD in atmospheric science (chemistry/physics), meteorology, environmental or related engineering. A background in either large-scale atmospheric modeling or experimental measurements of ice nucleating particles is desirable, but prior experience in both areas is not required.

To apply, please use the online application form:

While actual applications must be online at the above link, which also contains further information about the position, we welcome informal enquiries by email. Review of applications will begin on August 1, thereafter the position will be open until filled.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace culture and strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. Carnegie Mellon University is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or veteran status.
