The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to conduct innovative research in modeling river biogeochemistry fluxes and land-river interactions in biogeochemistry using the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM).

The candidate will work with a team of scientists across multiple national laboratories to test and improve the capabilities of E3SM in modeling river biogeochemistry fluxes and land-river interactions in carbon, nutrients, and/or salinity. The candidate will improve E3SM in land-river interactions and evaluate the models against observations of land and river hydrology and biogeochemistry. The candidate will also conduct numerical experiments to address important science questions related to human-land-river-ocean interactions, such as climate and human induced coastal hypoxia and salinity intrusion, in focused regions and across the globe. This position offers exciting opportunities to collaborate on a number of DOE funded research projects at PNNL that focus on developing coastal modeling capabilities in earth system models such as the Integrated Coastal Modeling (ICoM) project (https://icom.pnnl.gov/).

Required qualifications:

  *   A Ph.D. in geoscience, environmental science, civil and environmental engineering, or related fields;
  *   Demonstrated experience in modeling aquatic and/or terrestrial biogeochemical processes;
  *   Experience with high-performance computing environments;
  * Fluency in Fortran, MATLAB/Python, and shell scripting.

Preferred qualifications:

  *   Experience in developing and evaluating hydrology, biogeochemistry, or reactive transport models;
  *   Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills;
  *   A strong record of independent and productive research, as indicated by conference presentations and/or journal publications;
  * Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

The position is for two years and renewable contingent upon performance. To apply, please upload your CV to https://careers.pnnl.gov/jobs/3038?lang=en-ussourcing by Feb 17th, 2022.
