POSITION DESCRIPTION
POST DOCTORAL POSITION on compound climate extremes.
We seek applications to fill a full-time Postdoctoral Employee position for working on the project “Compound and cascading climate extremes in Chile”. Candidates are required to have a PhD (obtained after January 2019) in fields such as natural sciences, atmospheric sciences, engineering, water resources engineering, geography, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, glaciology, or other fields related to geosciences.
We seek a self-driven, creative thinker with strong quantitative and interpersonal skills to help accomplish an important and interesting set of research tasks. The successful candidate will join an exciting new initiative aimed at the assessment of the severity and frequency of compound and cascading events in Chile. We will focus on six costly and/or deadly hazards (heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, atmospheric rivers, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods or GLOFs, and algal blooms) that often occur as compound or cascading events. Rather than applying the traditional risk assessment methods (that typically only consider one driver and/or hazard at a time), we will investigate spatial-temporal patterns of concurrent hazards (for example, heatwaves -fires-droughts) and consecutive hazards (for example, heatwaves-> droughts-> fires; or atmospheric rivers -> flooding -> algal blooms).
The project brings together expertise in natural sciences, atmospheric sciences, engineering, water resources engineering, geography, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, and glaciology, and is conducted by an interdisciplinary team from the University of Santiago, University of Chile, University of O’Higgins, Catholic University of Valparaiso, University of Magallanes, and CEAZA in Chile. Excellent statistical analysis and programming skills, as well as expertise in remote sensing imagery and climate datasets (satellite-derived data, reanalysis, global and regional climate models) are essential. Candidates should have knowledge of statistical software, such as Stata or R, as well as of programming languages, such as Python. A working knowledge of the literature related to extreme events (regardless of the specific discipline) is not required but desired; an intellectual interest in interdisciplinary study is vital.
The successful candidate will lead the component of the project related to the evaluation of the effect of large-scale climate modes (such as the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), El Niño Southern Oscillation and the Southern Annular Mode (SAM)) on the frequency of heatwaves and flash droughts in central Chile (30°-40°S) and in Patagonia (40°-52°S). It is expected to identify the occurrence of cascading and compound events (in particular heatwaves and flash droughts) in connection with the phases and amplitudes of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) (and other modes of intraseasonal tropical variability) through reanalysis and general circulation models in order to better understand some of the mechanism behind the occurrence of these events.
The candidate will be mentored by one of the senior researchers involved in the project and will work closely with collaborators and doctoral students. Overall, it is expected that the postdoctoral researcher will engage in interdisciplinary efforts and be involved in analysis and publications.
Salary is expected to be CL$1,700,000 (equivalent to about US$2,000) per month. This salary is competitive and commensurate with the standard of living in Chile. Please consider that taxes and health insurance may amount up to 20%. The initial appointment will be for one year (12 months) with extensions for up to 18 additional months dependent on the performance.
Expected start date is June 1, 2022 (preferably earlier); if necessary, modifications are possible.
