The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia
invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate in atmospheric
convection.
The successful candidate will conduct experiments using observations, cloud
resolving models, and climate models (GCMs) to explore interactions between
tropical deep convection and the larger-scale environment. The overarching
goal of this work will be to (1) improve understanding of the environmental
conditions and mechanisms leading to the organization and upscale growth of
mesoscale convective systems in the tropics and (2) provide guidance for
improved representation of interactions between deep convection and the
larger-scale environment in GCMs. Observational analysis of organized
convective systems will be compared to cloud resolving simulations,
including simulations of convective self-aggregation. Exploring regional
differences in convective onset and organization across tropical land and
ocean regions will be of particular interest. Diagnostic tools for GCM
evaluation regarding interactions between convection and the larger-scale
environment will be developed and tested on the latest generation of CMIP6
models.
*QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: *A PhD in Atmospheric Science, Environmental
Sciences, or a related field is required by the start date. Relevant
experience with satellite data analysis and modeling is required.
