Responsibilities
PNNL is recruiting a postdoctoral research associate to conduct research aimed at improving understanding of physical processes that govern the evolution of deep convective cloud populations. This work may include research in the growth of shallow cumulus into deep convection, upscale growth and organization of individual clouds into mesoscale systems, and/or predictability and parameterization of cloud populations and precipitation. Working with PNNL scientists, the candidate will investigate how near-cloud and large-scale convective environments, topography, interactions among neighboring clouds, and aerosols affect the evolution of deep convective cloud macrophysical and microphysical properties. The successful candidate will examine comprehensive data sets collected by DOE ARM field campaigns and routine observing networks, as well as convection-permitting and large-eddy simulation ensembles. Analysis techniques will involve automated convection and environmental feature tracking, and potentially other novel analysis techniques such as machine learning.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

The position is for two years and renewable for a third year contingent upon performance and availability of funding. A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or related subjects is required. Familiarity with a variety of observational datasets from various platforms (e.g., radar, satellite, soundings), experience performing and analyzing convection-resolving model simulations (e.g., WRF, cloud-scale LES), and a strong understanding of deep convective cloud processes and their relationships with the environment is desirable. Experience with programming packages such as Python or Matlab for performing data analyses is essential. Experience with modification and evaluation of microphysics parameterizations is also useful.



The candidate will work with several scientists including Drs. Zhe Feng, James Marquis, Samson Hagos, and Adam Varble as part of a large, collaborative project covering a range of research related to cloud processes, land-atmosphere interactions, and aerosol processes.
