The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences (CSS) invites applications for a full time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Soil Science Assistant Professor position with expertise in pedology, soil genesis and morphology, soil landscape analysis or related areas.  Candidates that bridge these areas with other soil science disciplines that are complementary to the existing strengths of the department are also encouraged to apply.

Example research areas include (but are not limited to) dynamic soil properties; soil-landscape relationships and soil geomorphology; soil degradation; hydropedology; soil landscape processes; sustainable soil management; wetland soils; soil survey, soil databases, soil information systems, and geospatial information; forest soils; climate and land-use change; rangeland soils; mineralogy; remote sensing of soils; soil conservation; soil erosion; subaqueous soils; cultural soil resources; pedotransfer functions; or soil modeling.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous and innovative externally-funded research program that is internationally recognized and advances knowledge of and/or solutions to important problems in Soil Science. Candidates should be able to develop active collaborations within and outside the university, to advise graduate and undergraduate students, to engage with stakeholders interested in Oregon soils, and to be involved in service to the department, university, and the broader scientific community. The successful candidate will teach a course in Soil Morphology and Classification, and one additional course each year.  We seek a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Department of Crop and Soil Science has 114 on-campus faculty and staff, and an additional 33 off-campus faculty located at branch experiment stations and county extension offices with academic homes in CSS.   These faculty and staff are engaged in the department’s four missions in research, teaching, extension, and service.  There are more than 100 students seeking CSS degrees ranging from the BS to PhD.  As a faculty member at a land grant university, the incumbent is expected to excel in research and teaching, and to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in these areas. This position contributes to the missions of the Department of Crop and Soil Science, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University. The position will be located at the main Corvallis campus.

Oregon State University is a Land Grant Institution, and a large Carnegie R-1 public university located in Corvallis, Oregon.  Research opportunities at OSU benefit from the on-campus presence of the EPA Western Ecology Division, the USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center, the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, and a USDA Agricultural Research Service Unit. In addition, Soil Science faculty benefit from the proximity of a wide range of field environments, as well as departmental colleagues at branch experiment stations and county extension offices across Oregon.
