*Description:*
Under direct supervision, the position is responsible for assisting
engineers, programmers, and researchers in the planning, designing,
developing, implementing, and administering of hydrometeorological sensor
networks distributed throughout the western U.S. and disseminated to a wide
variety of platforms via cellular or satellite communications, that
acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data for special tasks that
include adaptive sampling during scientific experiments over oceans and
land. Supports junior researchers, interns, and graduate students to
prepare and test in the lab and then deploy and maintain field equipment in
various environments. Occasional programming and troubleshooting of
electronic components and data processing as needed. Supports long-term
research projects that rely on hydrometeorological monitoring and sampling
and keeps current with the latest technologies and research advances.
Uses professional engineering concepts. Develops and proposes engineering
plans and specifications for equipment and instruments with limited scope
and complexity. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing
situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

*QUALIFICATIONS*

   - Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or an equivalent combination of
   education and experience.
   - Working knowledge of machining techniques, including the ability to
   read mechanical drawings.
   - Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform
   entry-level professional engineering functions.
   - Ability to read schematics, solder, and operate equipment to test
   electronics.
   - Ability to operate instrument systems and laboratory test equipment.
   - Knowledge of laboratory, shop, and fieldwork safety procedures.
   - Experience with both PC and Unix operating systems. Ability to work
   with various operating systems and computer architectures.
   - Organizational skills to maintain laboratory space, tools, supplies,
   and equipment.
   - Ability to exercise independent judgment in the field and the lab.
   - Knowledge of Matlab, Python, or similar programming languages and
   ability to quickly become conversant in various languages.
   - Ability to work with various 3rd party sensors and data acquisition
   systems.
   - Ability to drive various vehicles and/or equipment used field and
   laboratory operations (car, truck, forklift, small cranes, etc.) and to
   obtain/maintain necessary licenses/permits for each.
   - Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field.
   - Effective written and verbal communication skills.
   - Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop
   appropriate recommendations.
   - Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a
   diverse group of people, to communicate clearly, and demonstrate
   thoughtfulness and diplomacy. Ability to work collaboratively
   - Willingness to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of
   community for a collaborative work environment.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS

   - Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on
   Background Check result.
   - Must be willing to go in the field for up to two months per year for
   up to three weeks throughout the year.
   - Evenings and weekends and irregular hours may be required.
   - Must be willing to perform fieldwork in variable terrain using rugged
   4WD vehicles, ships, small boats, helicopters, and small planes.
   - Must be able to perform heavy physical labor and work under adverse
   conditions. Must be able to use ladders, climb stairs, and lift over 60
   pounds.
   - Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.
