CIRES/ NOAA Weather Prediction Center, Meteorological Research Scientist

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Research Associate (Research Scientist) to generate experimental heavy precipitation object-based forecast tools, verify and process WPC forecaster-issued products, create prototype web pages, and manage/oversee various related projects.

WPC is located in College Park, MD, within the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP). The NCWCP is a highly collaborative environment containing several NOAA organizations, including the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), Ocean Prediction Center (OPC), and Climate Prediction Center (CPC). This position requires the incumbent to perform novel research, transition research projects to operations, serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on funded projects, supervise employees, and collaborate with external partners. This Research Scientist will interact with Federal WPC staff, NOAA scientists and forecasters, CIRES employees working at WPC, and external partners including the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research's (OAR) Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) Developmental Testbed Center (DTC).

The Weather Prediction Center<http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/> (WPC) is America's Go-To Center for high-impact precipitation events and forecast guidance out to 7 days for a Weather-Ready Nation.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  *   Utilize statistical techniques that link real-time heavy precipitation objects to similar retrospective objects and generate visuals to quantify forecast uncertainty.
  *   Maintain and improve several object-based heavy precipitation tracking websites utilized by WPC forecasters.
  *   Create and expand WPC verification of forecaster-issued products related to heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
  *   Generate first-guess fields (e.g. automated products that serve as a starting point) for WPC forecaster-issued products.
  *   Submit proposals, manage projects, contribute through scientific publications, supervise employees, collaborate with colleges, and attend various workshops and conferences.
  *   Develop training materials to assist users in the transition of new tools and techniques into operations.
  *   Ready various research-to-operations tools for evaluation in WPC testbed experiments and operational forecast environments.
  *   Performs other duties as necessary.
What You Should Know

  *   The targeted start date for this position is October 1, 2022 or November 1, 2022.
  *   Selected finalists will be required to pass a federal background check for site access.
  *   Normal working hours will be observed except for occasional irregular hours during data collection or conferences/workshops conducted at remote sites.
  *   The new hire will be employed by CIRES with technical oversight provided by WPC management. The incumbent is expected to work independently, supervise other CIRES employees working at WPC, and determine action to be taken in handling all but unusual situations. The incumbent is expected to serve as a leader of scientific or technical experiments, groups, or teams; therefore strong teamwork and leadership skills are necessary.
  *   This position is based at the WPC in College Park, MD.

  *   CIRES can offer a generous compensation package.
  *   The annual hiring salary range for this position is $70,000 - $110,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  *   Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado's relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  *   A PhD Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field.
  *   At least two years post-degree experience.
  *   Experience in working with interrogating large meteorological data sets (e.g. GRIB, netCDF, etc.).
  *   Experience with working in a Linux environment.
