Field & Laboratory Research Assistant

The Greenhouse Gas Emissions Lab. led by Dr. Francesca Hopkins in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside, is looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant.

The candidate will assist with ongoing projects to measure greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions from sources such as agricultural and municipal wastewater and oil and gas activities in California. We seek a motivated individual possessing a valid California driver’s license and a willingness to perform field work as well as to operate and maintain scientific instruments and handle data. The candidate should be enthusiastic and willing to learn. Desired qualifications include experience working with data in Excel or other software, using geographic information systems, experience driving larger vehicles, and using scientific instruments. Competitive candidates will have a B.S. degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline.

We research greenhouse gases and air pollutant emissions in California. The main project focuses on characterizing the emission signatures from select facilities using a mobile laboratory (UCR Laboratory for Isotope Measurements in the Environment/Analysis Vehicle for On-road Capture of Atmospheric Data and Observations) and on-site measurements at dairy farms and in oil fields. The position is available immediately with a start date ideally no later than September 1, 2022.

Job responsibilities include:

Drive the mobile laboratory (Mercedes Sprinter van) during field measurements

Assist with research activities in the lab and field including projects led by students and postdocs

Organize and coordinate the laboratory supplies/consumables and needs, including scientific

instruments maintenance and operation, and mobile laboratory setup maintenance

Processing, organizing, and archiving of scientific data

Learn to use laboratory instrumentation and field tools and data processing

Actively participate in research activities including seminars, workshops, and lab meetings
