There is an opening for a post-doctoral researcher at NCAR in the
Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Modeling Laboratory to conduct
research on the removal of aerosols by convective storms. The project
aims to determine aerosol scavenging efficiencies and evaluate with
aircraft observations modeled scavenging of aerosols in different types
of convection from airmass storms to severe storms. The observational
analysis will make use of NASA data from three field campaigns, the 2012
DC3 experiment focused on US storms in springtime, the 2013 SEAC4RS
experiment that included investigations of convection in the south and
southeast US, and the 2019 CAMP2Ex experiment that examined convection
near the Philippines.
This work will employ the WRF-Chem and CESM CAM-chem models configured
at different scales from cloud-resolving scales to regional-scales to
global-scales. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct WRF-Chem simulations
of existing case studies from DC3 and SEAC4RS, participate in the
analysis of the observations of these case studies, and analyze output
from the CAM-chem model including its MUSICA V0 configuration. The
postdoctoral fellow will configure and conduct WRF-Chem simulations of
CAMP2Ex case studies identified by the project’s team. One outcome of
the research is introducing improved model parameterizations into the
community CAM-chem model of aerosol scavenging based on cloud-scale and
cloud-parameterized simulations.
The postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively with project leads and
team members within NCAR’s ACOM laboratory, university collaborators,
and NASA scientists to advance the science in aerosol scavenging and
representing this important depositional sink in air quality and climate
models while gaining post-doctoral research experience.
