The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University
invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to conduct
research in the fields of glaciology and climate data science. The
successful candidate would join a project aimed at using machine
learning and artificial intelligence to emulate ice flow physics in ice
sheet models. The project team consists of Jonathan Kingslake (LDEO),
David Porter (LDEO), Robin Bell (LDEO), and Laure Zanna (New York
University). Our initial objectives include developing work flows to
simulate ice flow over high-resolution basal topography with
physics-based models and to emulate this process using machine learning
algorithms.
This project is funded by a new science and technology center based at
Columbia University called Learning the Earth through Artificial
intelligence and Physics (LEAP). LEAP brings together geoscientists and
machine learning experts to improve Earth system models and establish
the new interdisciplinary field of climate data science. The successful
candidate will engage with the interdisciplinary activities of the
center by, for example, organizing and chairing LEAP working groups.
They will also have opportunities to participate in LEAP's education and
knowledge transfer activities.
*_Minimum Qualifications:_*
* Either a PhD in geophysics and some experience of machine learning,
or a PhD in machine learning/applied mathematics/statistics and a
strong interest in applying machine learning to geophysics and
glaciology specifically.
* Mathematical modeling.
* Scientific computing (e.g., Matlab, Python, etc.).
* Publishing peer-reviewed publications.
*_Desirable Experience:_*
* Modeling ice flow with physics-based models.
* Using machine learning algorithms to describe physical processes.
* Advanced computational skills (e.g., scientific Python packages,
high-performance computing, cloud computing, big data analysis,
algorithm development).
Appointment will be for 1-year with continuation pending progress and
funding.
The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears
and will continue until the position is filled.
Columbia University benefits are offered with this Officer of Research
appointment.
