Want to join something GREAT and make a difference?
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity
within our Washington Geological Survey Division. A geologic map forms the
basis for making sound decisions about geologic hazards, identifying earth
resources (including groundwater), and understanding a wide range of
natural phenomenon. We are looking for a dynamic geologist with excellent
GIS and communication skills to help us build the next generation of
geologic maps. Your mapping will help us fulfill our six main principles:
identify and characterize geologic hazards, build understanding of water
and earth resources to improve Growth Management Act Planning, provide
mapping in areas of emerging societal need, understand geologic processes,
map using lidar, and collaborate with a wide range of internal and external
stakeholders.
Duties
Responsibilities:
To help produce some of the nation’s best geologic maps, you will use your
background in geology, excellent organizational and time-management skills,
and advanced practical knowledge of GIS to conduct original and independent
geologic mapping. You will work in a wide variety of metamorphic, igneous,
and sedimentary bedrock, and a varied suite of glacial and non-glacial
Quaternary deposits. You will use lidar to identify geologic and geomorphic
features, especially in the vegetated parts of the state where outcrops are
sparse and often weathered. You will combine your self-directed learning
with a broad knowledge of associated fields (such as geochemistry,
geochronology, paleontology, and geophysics) to select additional
techniques to address a given research aim.
Your work is guided by a fairly rigorous annual mapping cycle: four months
of field work is followed by six months of analysis and writing and two
months of editing and revisions. The end product is typically a map plate,
an associated pamphlet, and any supplementary analytical data. You will
apply your organization, excellent and clear writing, and ability to
analyze and synthesize geologic information to meet these deliverables.
Your interpersonal and time-management skills will be essential for working
with management to develop mapping priorities, determine project milestones
and schedules, and meet these on time, within scope, and within available
work hours.
Geologic mapping is well on its way from an era of paper maps into a fully
digital environment. Your GIS skills will be crucial to successfully
working with complex geodatabases, and your belief in efficiency and
innovation will help us innovate our shared digital future.

landslide morphology and processes, d) glacial processes and stratigraphy,
e) geophysical methods that support geologic mapping, f) tectonic
geomorphology with techniques used to study processes of vertical
deformation, g) geochronology or paleontology, h) neotectonic
investigations, i) geochemistry.

establishing relationships and collaborating with scientists at diverse
organizations, planning and coordinating field logistics, and budgeting.
