The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland, is recruiting a PhD student to join a newly funded project studying the chemical composition and sources of atmospheric organic aerosols in pristine environments with a focus on the cryosphere. The thesis will be within the Ambizione project:
"Macromolecular aerosols in the cryosphere from the Arctic to the Alps (MACrAA)". The student will be able to collaborate with leading scientists in the fields of polar / alpine science and environmental chemistry, to gain a range of experience and a broad network of collaborators. The preferred start date of the position is August 2022, but there is some flexibility.

The project will combine laboratory studies, chamber experiments and fieldwork to identify key compounds in atmospheric aerosols and determine their sources and composition with different types of state-of-the-art mass spectrometers. At the center is the development and optimisation of a new method for the quantification of high molecular weight, polymeric compounds. The student will lead the development and performance of this work and perform statistical analysis and interpretation of complex and large datasets. The student is expected to write and contribute to high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and present findings at scientific conferences. Together with team members and external project members, there is a lot of room for development of own ideas, depending on the students interest, in all aspects of academia.

Required qualifications are:
- Master's degree in chemistry, physics, statistics, environmental sciences, or similar
- Proficiency in oral and written communication in English.

Desired qualifications are:
- First experiences in programming and data analysis techniques
- First experiences in applied laboratory work
- Interest in atmospheric processes combined with initiative and enthusiasm to conduct research in a multidisciplinary, international team
- The student should have a strong self-interest to work and acquire knowledge outside their traditional area of expertise

This position is fully funded for four years. You will be enrolled in the doctoral program of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ). Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration and we encourage application of students with a diverse range of backgrounds. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.

Please submit your application online by 31 May 2022.
