The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity
within our Washington Geological Survey Division. Do you love using spatial
data to communicate geoscience to the public? Do you enjoy helping others
solve GIS problems? Do you secretly get excited about datums and map
projections? If so you might be a great fit for our team at the Washington
Geological Survey! We are looking for a GIS specialist with a geography or
geoscience background to join our highly motivated team of editors,
cartographers, and data scientists as part of our Publications Group. As
part of our team you will use your experience with GIS and understanding of
basic geographic principles to provide support to Survey scientists in the
use of GIS software and the implementation of GIS solutions for a variety
of science, data management, and data publication needs. This will include
publishing map services to our online interactive Geologic Information
Portal, developing new stand-alone interactive map experiences, and working
with others in our team to help our scientists develop and publish new
database schemas. You will use your excellent communication skills and
customer service-oriented mindset to teach others how to use GIS software
and develop solutions to make complex GIS workflows more efficient. The
work you do and the help you provide to others will make an important
contribution to the Survey’s efforts to publish the best possible science.

Duties

Responsibilities:

   - Maintaining and publishing map services that make our wide array of
   geologic datasets available to the public via our Geologic Information
   Portal, with databases covering topics ranging from geologic mapping,
   landslide inventories, and tsunami inundation modeling to subsurface
   borehole logs and geophysical data compilations.
   - Designing, developing, and maintaining new interactive GIS web map
   applications for publication on our website.
   - Providing GIS training and technical support to our scientists by
   acting as the go-to person for GIS questions in the Survey.
   - Patience and good communication both verbally and in writing to train
   people with a range of comfort levels with technology.
   - An appreciation for teamwork, and a positive, diligent,
   solutions-oriented work ethic.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

   - Bachelors degree in Geography or other related field.
   - Three years of experience working with ArcGIS including expert
   knowledge of ArcGIS Pro.
   - Three years of experience working with Esri GIS solutions including
   publishing map services and developing online map experiences and apps
   using Esri tools.
   - Three years of experience in database schema design and data
   management.
   - Working knowledge of geographic map projections, datums, and
   coordinate systems.
   - Experience in explaining complex topics orally and in writing to a
   wide range of technical and non-technical audiences.

   - IMPORTANT NOTE: The Commissioner of Public Lands has instituted a
   requirement that all employees of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
   be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18, 2021, as a condition of

Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:

   - Masters degree in Geography or other related field.
   - Undergraduate or graduate coursework in geology or physical geography.
   - Familiarity with coding languages such as Python or Arcade.
