Field Hydrogeologist/Geophysics Technician: Full-time from Oct. 1, 2021 - Dec. 31, 2022

The Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Toledo, OH seeks a Field Hydrogeophysics Technician to lead field geophysical, hydrological and wetland sampling campaigns as part of its wetland monitoring project within Northwest Ohio. This position is part of a grant funded project on monitoring restored wetlands to understand their effectiveness in retaining nutrients. The project involves collaboration between scientists from over 8 institutions and agencies through the Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network (LEARN). Close collaboration with LEARN project partners and scientists is expected. The position is available on a full-time basis for 15 months starting October 1, 2021 with potential renewal pending continuing external funding.

Responsibilities

  *   Geophysical characterization and monitoring of wetlands' shallow subsurface
     *   Field measurement, analysis/inversion and interpretation of geophysical data including electromagnetic, electrical resistivity, self-potential and ground penetrating radar at multiple wetlands within Ohio
     *   Keeping detailed field protocol and documenting results
     *   Presenting geophysical results as multi-dimensional images (visualization)
  *   Wetland soil sampling and analysis (in the field and lab)
  *   Installation of 1 - 2 inches temporary groundwater monitoring wells
  *   Hydraulic testing including slug and tracer testing
  *   Surface and groundwater sampling and parameter monitoring
  *   Integrating results in a GIS environment
  *   Use total station and differential GPS system
  *   Coordinating field visits to wetland sites and participating in regular wetland monitoring campaigns

Requirements

  *   A minimum bachelor's degree in geophysics, geology, environmental sciences, physics, engineering, or other related discipline.
  *   Willingness and ability to engage in intensive field research activities including spending significant time outdoors, operating and maintaining equipment, etc.
  *   Experience or willingness to learn and implement field geophysical and hydrogeological methods
  *   Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  *   A good quantitative and analytical ability

Communication and other skills

  *   Effective communication skills (oral and written)
  *   Ability to work without close supervision and to make decisions concerning weather conditions and other logistical factors
  *   Ability to work closely with students, faculty, and other staff to maintain research efficiency of the project.
