Description of Work Unit
The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission "to ensure the sustainability of the Earth's ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge." The department's interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.
Position Summary
The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory seeks a laboratory technician in the field of soil microbiology and biochemistry. The technician will contribute to research on the cycling of rare carbohydrates in soil organisms and the environment. This lab technician will be responsible for developing libraries of soil microorganisms capable of consuming and synthesizing rare carbohydrates and proteins. This will require helping build new microbial discovery platforms. In addition, the laboratory technician will support efforts to identify the genes responsible for novel metabolism. The position is ongoing, pending adequate performance and available funding.
Required Job Qualifications
* Candidates must have at least a B.S./B.A. degree.
* Degree(s) should be in Microbial Ecology, Soil Microbiology, or other closely related field
* Broad understanding of soil processes, microbial physiology and microbial interactions with the environment
* 3 years experience developing laboratory assays in soils and/or cultures
* Excellent communication skills
Preferred Job Qualifications
* Master's degree plus at least 2 years experience or PhD
* Experience in developing microbial isolate or consortia libraries via a variety of microbial culturing and isolation approaches
* Experience mentoring undergraduate students
* Previous experience in working with the soil organic matter cycling and stabilization
* Demonstrated ability to contribute to peer-reviewed publications
* Work with stable isotope tracers
