Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking an HBOI Postdoctoral Fellow Biogeochemistry, Harbor Branch campus in Fort Pierce, FL.

The candidate will mainly lead the technical scientific aspects of two projects, with exposure to other projects as well: An EPA funded effort to explore nutrient dynamics in the C-44 canal, which connects Lake Okeechobee with the St. Lucie Estuary. This area is a regional hotspot for blooms of freshwater harmful algal species, but most studies to date have instead focused on either the lake or estuary endmember. The work will consist of sediment core collection, core processing and electrochemical profiling, and wet chemical analyses of nutrient speciation.  A foundation-funded effort to examine mercury cycling in the St. Lucies Estuary and greater Indian River Lagoon. While specific experience in mercury biogeochemistry is desirable, the actual analyses of collected samples will be conducted primarily through external labs, with onsite work instead related to environmental characterization. Sediment core incubations will also be conducted. For this project, the candidate will additionally assume a more formal project managerial role.

With respect to both projects, the collected data will be used to parameterize a 3-D biogeochemical model - a specific task of a collaborating research group. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sediment geochemistry, specifically, redox processes, nutrient dynamics, and trace metals. The candidate will conduct statistical, harmonic, or diagenetic analyses/modeling to reveal these trends. The candidate is expected to author several scientific publications resulting from the work, including a methods-based journal article as well as traditional research reports.  Postdoctoral fellows are provided the opportunity and are expected to co-author proposals to secure additional funding. There will be opportunity for travel to state and national conferences. There are also likely to be opportunities for media appearances given the importance of the environmental issue in Florida and nationally. Currently, 18 months of funding are currently secured for the position, with additional funding probable but not guaranteed.

Summary of responsibilities:
Manage the testing and deployment of novel in situ instrumentation, including electrochemical analyzers and benthic lander platforms.
Participate in regular field sampling events and collection of trace metal clean samples.
Coordinate and conduct chemical analyses on water and sediment samples, including a combination of dissolved and solid phase nutrients and trace metals (spectrophotometry, electrochemistry, TOC analyzer, Elemental analyzer (CHNSO), ion chromatography).
Maintain accurate data records, ensure data are compliant with lab standards, and regularly update lab database.
Assist or lead budgeting, literature research, and writing proposals, QA/QC documents, manuscripts, and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Chemistry, Biogeochemistry, Oceanography, or related area of specialization by time of appointment required.
Experience with sediments is preferred.
Extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry lab practices, procedures, and equipment. Must be familiar with lab safety standards, including proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals. Independent problem solving and troubleshooting may be required to resolve any issues that arise and corrective action taken as needed.
Must be capable of collecting data following SOPs, ensuring data integrity and validity.
Must be able to interpret data and make inferences that can relate to future research studies.
Individual must be motivated, organized, and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Routinely flexible hours are required, including potential evening and weekend schedules as required for project needs.
A valid driver’s license is required.
Knowledge of boat operation or the willingness to learn to operate a boat is required.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
