Postdoctoral Research Scholar – Legacy Phosphorus Data Synthesis
Job Summary:
The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina
State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar
position in the areas of geospatial modeling, nutrient biogeochemistry, and
environmental/agricultural data analysis. The postdoctoral research scholar
will report directly to Dr. Natalie Nelson and also work closely with Drs.
Owen Duckworth (Crop and Soil Sciences) and Dan Obenour (Environmental
Engineering).
The position is funded through the newly-established Science and
Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center (
https://steps-center.org/), headquartered at NC State University. STEPS is
a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Science and Technology Center
(STC). STEPS seeks to discover new science and develop new technologies and
techniques that will increase the level of recycled phosphorus and reduce
society’s dependence of mined phosphorus by using a convergence research
approach. The outcomes of STEPS activities will lead to the enhanced
resilience of food systems and improve environmental conditions. STEPS is a
partnership between North Carolina State University, Arizona State
University, University of Florida, RTI International, Appalachian State
University, Marquette University, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering
at North Carolina A&T State University and University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. STEPS headquarters will be located in the Plant Sciences
Building, a new intersectional space on NC State’s Centennial Campus that
will be completed in early 2022.
Interested applicants should be available to start by February 2022. The
position is expected to be funded through the summer of 2023 subject to
satisfactory performance.
The successful candidate is expected to perform literature and data
syntheses to generate modeling strategies and datasets for representing
phosphorus retention in agricultural lands and surface waters at the
national scale. The scholar will perform literature reviews and inform the
development of national phosphorus inventories, as well as generate peer
reviewed publications in scientific journals and assist with leading
research efforts.
We especially encourage women, members of underrepresented groups, and
persons with disabilities to apply.
Immediate Supervisor: Natalie Nelson
Major Responsibilities:
The candidate will be expected to:
· Review and synthesize quantitative studies related to legacy
phosphorus dynamics.
· Manage large datasets from multiple sources.
· Create and implement a roadmap for estimating phosphorus
retention and losses at the national-scale.
· Generate peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical reports, and
present the work at technical conferences
Degree: Ph.D.
Field of Study: Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Environmental
Engineering, Soil Science, Hydrologic Science, or related.
Certifications, Registrations, Licenses: None needed
Skills, Proficiencies and Knowledge:
The ideal candidate will have experience working with a programming
language like R or Python, experience with geographic information systems
(GIS), experience in studying and nutrient fate and transport, and strong
technical communication skills (written and oral).
Salary: $47,000 - $57,000 depending on qualifications
