A Ph.D. position is available within the Department of Biology at East Carolina University beginning Fall 2022. We are seeking a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry (IDPBBC) to work with an interdisciplinary group of researchers at ECU and the Coastal Studies Institute, in collaboration with NC State University, on a project to increase the resiliency of municipal and aquaculture wastewater treatment (WWT) methods. Approaches include the use of integrated, adaptive, and sustainable ecological engineered treatment technologies (EETTs), development of novel biosensors and automated control systems, assessment of barriers to adoption of EETTs via engagement with relevant stakeholders, and technoeconomic analyses. This specific position will be responsible for evaluating the role of microorganisms as indicators of a well-running system and better inform decision making for improvements in the water treatment process. This person will be expected to conduct functional metagenomic analyses, quantitative PCR, microbiological culturing, and integration of geochemical data within the larger scope of the project. Prospective students must have a minimum of a B.S. in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, computational biology, or related field. The qualified candidate should be proficient in communication skills including scientific writing, oral presentations, and the ability to work well in a collaborative environment. Additional information about the department and graduate programs can be found at https://biology.ecu.edu/.<https://biology.ecu.edu/>

Interested students should send a CV, short statement of research interests, and contact information for two references to Dr. Erin Field (fielde14 at ecu.edu<mailto:fielde14 at ecu.edu>). Any questions can also be directed to this e-mail address.
