Dear Colleagues,
The Carbon & (H2)Optics Lab at Cleveland State University is seeking motivated, independent students interested in research on aquatic carbon cycles, optics and remote sensing. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a NASA-funded research project on hyperspectral remote sensing of aquatic carbon cycling in Lake Superior, with data collection both in the field and lab, as well as modeling and satellite algorithm development opportunities. Students can choose the area of the project they are most interested in and are encouraged to pursue their own research questions that align with the broader project goals.
A BS/MS in a relevant science field (e.g., biology, environmental science, computer science) is required. Students should be enthusiastic to work in a variety of settings, from fieldwork on a small research vessel to lab and computer-based research. Members from groups underrepresented in STEM are highly encouraged to apply. A competitive research stipend will be provided, and students will be encouraged to apply for external funding to foster increased independence and self-efficacy. Preference will be given to candidates with a passion for carbon cycle science and remote sensing, prior experience with coding or geospatial software, dedication to long days in the field and lab, and demonstrated proficiency in quantitative, writing and communication skills.
Interested applicants can learn more about potential research experiences at our website (https://www.coffeeandoptics.com/). Applicants should submit a single PDF that includes (1) a cover letter outlining your interests in carbon cycling and/or remote sensing, research questions you are interested in pursuing as part of your graduate work and relevant experience/skills for the position; (2) your CV; (3) a copy of your unofficial transcripts; and (4) contact information for three professional references to Brice Grunert (b.grunert at csuohio.edu<mailto:b.grunert at csuohio.edu>). Priority will be given to applications received by January 21, 2022, with an expected start date in Summer or Fall 2022. Only selected applicants will be asked to formally apply to Cleveland State’s graduate school (https://grad.engagecsu.com/).
Best,
Brice Grunert, Assistant Professor
