PhD opportunity, Drinking Water Threats in a Changing Environment, University of Pittsburgh
The Pitt Isotope Tracers Lab, directed by Dr. Emily M. Elliott, in the Department of Geology & Environmental Science at the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA) is hiring a graduate student at the PhD level to advance ongoing efforts that examine threats to water quality in the Ohio River basin.  Research areas may include an assessment of hydro-climatic shifts driving nutrient fluxes, dynamics of riverine cyanoHAB blooms, synthesis of historic changes in water chemistry and discharge, and relative efficacy of point source permits and nonpoint source pollutant controls aimed at improving water quality.

The PhD student(s) will join the Elliott Lab team < http://www.pitt.edu/~eelliott/index.html> focused on understanding nutrient dynamics using stable isotope bio/geochemistry.  The PhD student will work on a highly collaborative team that includes concurrent efforts by the Gardner Lab <https://www.geology.pitt.edu/people/john-gardner> at UPitt to create a new database of chlorophyll-a and algal blooms along the Ohio River using remote sensing.

The research team will engage with community stakeholders through the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory < http://www.water.pitt.edu<http://www.water.pitt.edu/>>, housed at the University of Pittsburgh.  The Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory addresses societal water challenges through academic-community partnerships, cultivating future water leaders, catalyzing research, and bridging efforts in water research, governance and action.

Candidates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (including freshwater ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, isotope biogeochemistry) are welcome, however prior research experience is required.  Ideal candidates will be highly motivated, curious, organized and have strong communication and teamwork skills.
