Job Summary
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at
the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Professional Research
Assistant to provide scientific and technical meteorological expertise,
develop and transition deterministic and probabilistic hazard information
into forecast operations, with a particular focus on winter weather. The
position will be based at the WPC in College Park, MD, within the NOAA
Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP). The NCWCP is a highly
collaborative environment containing several NOAA organizations, including
the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC).
The incumbent will interact with NWS SOOs, NCEP Staff, and the research
community to improve NWS forecaster's use of hazard information.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
1. Use scientific and technical meteorological expertise to develop
tools for the determination of hazard information with an emphasis on winter
weather.
2. Develop web applications using modern industry languages and tools
such as; GIS, Python, and PHP.
3. Coordinate with NWS staff and external researchers to lead the
development of forecast tools.
4. Contribute to formal scientific publications, submit grant
proposals, attend off-site conferences, symposia, and
hazardous-weather-related outreach events
5. Perform related duties as assigned.
What You Should Know
* Please note that those applicants requiring visa sponsorship now or

* Applicants must be currently authorized to legally work in the
United States on a full-time basis.
* Normal working hours will be observed except for occasional
irregular hours during data collection, warning/forecast experiments or
workshops conducted at remote sites.
* The new hire will be employed by CIRES with technical oversight
provided by WPC management. The incumbent works under general supervision
but is expected to work independently and determine action to be taken in
handling all but unusual situations. This is a non-supervisory position,
although the incumbent is expected to serve as a leader of scientific or
technical experiments, groups, or teams; therefore strong teamwork and
leadership skills are necessary.

* CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is
commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES
internal career track classification.
* The annual hiring salary range for this position is $65,000 -
$75,000.
* Some relocation funds are available for this position following
CIRES and the University of Colorado's relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
* A Masters or PhD Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or a
related area is required.
* At least one year of experience in operational meteorology or
applied research is required.
* Preference will be given to candidates with considerable experience
in ensemble prediction systems and their application to hazardous weather
diagnosis and prediction, and some experience with creation/dissemination of
probabilistic hazard information.

* Outstanding oral and written communication skills are highly desired
and a strong ability to work in a collaborative team environment is needed
for the position.
* Experience with Linux (or UNIX) operating systems, software skills
including programming and scripting languages, web page development, and
graphic design or illustration.
