Dear Colleagues,
The Division of Marine Science in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE) at The University of Southern Mississippi invites qualified applicants for a non-tenure track faculty position as Assistant Teaching Professor (or Instructor, depending upon terminal degree) and Coordinator of the Uncrewed Maritime Systems Certificate Program, to begin in Spring 2022. This position is a full-time, 9-month academic position with the opportunity to pursue external funding for the summer months. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will coordinate the Uncrewed Maritime Systems (UMS) certificate programs in the Division of Marine Science and serve as the primary instructor of the associated courses. Presently the program includes the Tier 1 (UMS Certificate) offering, which consists of a 10-credit hour course sequence, and the Tier 2 (UMS Operator Certificate) offering, which consists of a 12-credit hour course sequence that presently focuses on buoyancy gliders. These programs are delivered in a concentrated 5-week period each semester, in order to provide the students with an immersive environment and team building experience.
The coordination responsibilities include assisting the SOSE Director and Associate Director with managing the program budget, writing reports, outreach and recruiting students, interfacing with the continuing education coordinators of our federal agency partners (e.g., US Navy, NOAA, Army Corp of Engineers), overseeing the student enrollment process, continuing curation of curricula, ongoing development / expansion of program offerings, recruiting subject matter expert guest lecturers that provide exposure to cutting edge technologies of this fast developing field, and ensuring that student laptops, software, lab equipment, and facilities are maintained.
