PhD student in Predictability of Climate Extremes incl. Machine Learning
Uppsala University, Sweden
There is an opening for a Ph.D. position in my group in Uppsala University.
The preferred start date is March 2022, with flexibility for earlier or
later dates, and the position is for 48 months. Do not hesitate to contact
me (gabriele.messori at geo.uu.se) should you have any questions.* Note that
the new deadline for applications is the 24th November.*
*Further details and application form here: *

Applications over email will not be accepted.
*The position*
The Ph. D. candidate will work within the frame of the ERC grant “Compound
Climate Extremes in North America and Europe: from Dynamics to
Predictability”. By using machine learning approaches, indicators issued
from dynamical systems theory and ensemble forecast simulations, the
candidate will contribute to quantify extreme event predictability in the
medium range in both present and future climates. The Ph. D. candidate, if
s/he so wishes, will also have the opportunity to engage in
teaching/supervising duties.
*The research group*
I coordinate a lively research group based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences
in Uppsala, which focuses on the dynamics of extreme climate events in the
mid and high latitudes and their interactions with other components of the
Earth System. I currently head two nationally funded research projects, an
ERC project and a large H2020 consortium. More information on our ongoing
research can be found at *https://gmessori.eu/ <https://gmessori.eu/>*.
*The department*
Uppsala University is a comprehensive, research-intensive university with a
strong international standing. The Department of Earth Sciences (
https://www.geo.uu.se/ <https://www.geo.uu.se/?languageId=1>) is one of the
most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on
subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from
submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and
oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.
