The Department of Environmental Studies [http://envs.ucsc.edu] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for faculty positions in Environmental Policy (assistant professor), Ecological Aquaculture (assistant professor), and Agroecology/Watershed Ecology (assistant or associate professor). Brief descriptions for each position are included below and full advertisements are linked. For all positions we seek individuals: (1) with demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration among natural and social scientists and (2) who understand the barriers facing women, low-income, and minoritized individuals who are underrepresented in higher education. For full consideration applications should be submitted by Jan. 3, 2022.

Environmental Policy: We seek a scholar with expertise in environmental policy with a U.S. focus that supports existing and emerging areas of excellence in the department, including US law and policy surrounding conservation; climate change; coastal sustainability; environmental justice; renewable energy; sustainable agriculture; and water supply, quality and rights. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in deploying qualitative and/or quantitative social science methods appropriate to their discipline and research agenda. Ecological Aquaculture: We seek a scholar who engages in research in ecological aquaculture, with connections to agroecology and sustainable food systems. The successful candidate will bring expertise in technical, physiological, chemical, and/or molecular approaches in aquaculture, along with knowledge of sustainability in food production. Specific areas of research may include but are not limited to topics such as integrating sustainable aquaculture systems with agroecological management systems, developing aquaculture innovations to minimize impacts on wild fish populations, sustainability of production systems, or reducing negative environmental impacts. Agroecology & Watershed Ecology: We seek a scholar who engages in research on agroecology, biogeochemistry, ecosystem processes, soil ecology, and/or human impacts on nutrient and water fluxes in agricultural watersheds. The candidate will have interests in understanding if and how agricultural technology can be used to mitigate environmental problems associated with agriculture while ensuring access, appropriateness, and utility for a wide range of growers including small-scale, diversified, and organic farmers. The candidate will have experience working with environmental monitoring, biogeochemical analysis, and/or the food-energy-water-soil-climate nexus, and will bring analytical skills, technical expertise, and knowledge needed to work across temporal and spatial scales. We are especially interested in candidates who understand the biophysical, ecological, and social complexities of agroecosystem management, and consider agroecology as a culturally-grounded, transdisciplinary, action-oriented, and politically-engaged transformation of the food system.
