*Description*
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) pioneers collaborative
solutions to global ocean challenges. We steward the Gulf of Maine
ecosystem and the hardworking communities that depend on it through a mix
of science, education, and community programming.
The Marine Resource Education Program (MREP) empowers fishermen and other
fisheries stakeholders to effectively participate in federal fisheries
science and management through a 2-part series of 3-day workshops that
engage 20-30 fishermen participants with 10-15 fisheries researchers and
managers in a neutral setting. We operate in NOAA’s Greater Atlantic (New
England and Mid-Atlantic council regions), Southeast (South Atlantic and
Gulf of Mexico council regions), Caribbean, and Pacific fishery regions,
and conduct between 10-15 events annually. Foundationally a program
developed in Maine by fishermen, for fishermen, MREP is committed to
remaining regionally relevant through collaborative program development
with regional leadership.
The MREP Program Manager will execute GMRI’s role in developing and running
MREP workshops along the East Coast, which will include at least two of the
following NOAA regions: Greater Atlantic, Southeast, and Caribbean. In
addition, this position will oversee communication efforts designed to
promote MREP and keep alumni connected.
The position is based at GMRI in Portland, Maine and requires frequent
travel to the program regions, including two 3–4-day trips for each
workshop offering (up to five per year) and up to three shorter (1-2 day)
trips to facilitate steering committee meetings.
This is a salaried position. The MREP Program Manager will report to the
MREP National Program Manager, and will work closely with GMRI’s other
Community team programs, as well as a diverse group of fisheries industry
partners throughout the regions MREP operates in. The target start date for
this position is late April/early May 2021.
*Responsibilities/Tasks*
Manage GMRI’s role in MREP in select regions - Facilitate delivery of MREP
programs with support from MREP National Program Manager and in
collaboration with regional steering committees, program principals, NOAA
fisheries, and the regional Councils, plus other appropriate regulatory
agencies and industry stakeholders. For each regional program, which
include the Greater Atlantic, Southeast, and Caribbean (Puerto Rico; US
Virgin Islands):
Coordinate and facilitate annual steering committee meetings in each region
(1 per year per region)
Plan, manage, and facilitate activity of regional program, including 2
workshops:
- Agenda development,
- Identification and invitation of speakers,
- Development/refinement of hands-on educational activities/role play
exercises, etc.,
- Speaker preparation discussions, and
- Recruitment of participants.
Manage logistics in collaboration with MREP Administrator to:
- Identify and secure meeting locations, hotels, meals, and
transportation,
- Production and delivery of meeting materials,
- Ensure proper logistics of field trips (science workshops only),
and
- Dissemination and collection of program evaluations from participants
(workshops only).
Manage complex collaborative oversight of program, including:
- Relationship building and maintenance of key leaders in MREP regions,
and
- Collaborate with program leadership, including the National Steering
Committee, to share results across other MREP regions.
In coordination with the MREP National Program Manager, contribute to
program improvement projects, which could include:
- Mentorship program
- Alumni communications and collaboration, and
- Facilitate regional task force delivery of program improvement
projects, as needed.
Manage regional MREP-related communication, in collaboration with MREP
National Program Manager
- Coordinate and contribute to development & maintenance of MREP’s
website,
- Refine on-line application, notification, and registration process as
warranted,
- Collect/track MREP-related stories, particularly from alumni
experience in research or management,
- Coordinate public-facing communication with regional principals and
GMRI communication director, and
- Prepare meeting reports and post-workshop communications.
Participate in and contribute to broader Community Department meetings and
activities as well as GMRI meetings and activities; and support other MREP
and organizational needs as required.

*Requirements*
GMRI invites candidates with demonstrated experience in project management;
facilitation and collaboration; strong communication across diverse groups,
maintaining sensitivity to a broad array of stakeholders; a collaborative
and professional demeanor; and an interest in science, education and/or the
ocean.
*Specific requirements include*:
- At least 5 years’ experience working with the fishing industry or
similar demographic/industry.
- At least two years of project management experience.
- Experience coordinating events of 50+ people, with experience in the
hospitality industry or other fact-based consumer-facing event delivery
environment.
- M.S. degree OR equivalent knowledge through work/life experience, and
a hunger to learn.
- A self-starter capable of juggling several projects.
- A team player with a sense of humor and ability to remain flexible
amid changing needs.A high emotional intelligence and ability to
collaborate effectively with a diverse group of fisheries industry leaders,
fisheries scientists and managers, and other industry stakeholders.
- A people-person who enjoys interacting with fishing industry members,
stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and scientists.
- Comfort managing and accomplishing multiple tasks.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with proven record of
attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
- Strong core computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, & PowerPoint.
- Interest in electronic communication and social networking technology.
- Interest in working in a dynamic and entrepreneurial setting.
- Commitment to GMRI’s mission.
*Other Preferred Qualifications:*
- Sales Force and/or other customer contact management system experience
a plus.
- Interest in coastal communities, science, and education.
- Spanish language proficiency preferred.
- Experience with facilitative management of teams
