The College and Graduate school of Arts & Sciences at the University of
Virginia solicits applications to the Rising Scholars Postdoctoral
Fellowship Program. This program seeks to recruit postdoctoral scholars
who have the potential to assume a tenure-track faculty position and would
benefit from a mentored professional development opportunity.

There are two components to this program: Postdoctoral fellowships
intended to support under-represented scholars in any field, and
Postdoctoral fellowships in the arts and humanities and Social Sciences
funded by a university-wide Race, Place and Equity grant from the Mellon
Foundation to advance research and teaching of issues race, justice and
equity (RJE) broadly conceived. Applicants to the first component can apply
to any participating Arts & Sciences department; applicants in STEM fields
are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants to the Mellon-funded
component should specify a home department in the Arts and Humanities or
Social Sciences and must work on RJE-related issues.

Applicants must have a terminal degree (PhD, or, where appropriate, an
MFA) by the beginning of the Fellowship. The RJE component specifically
seeks applicants with a relevant scholarly or creative focus, e.g., labor
stratification, race and environment, inequity, civil rights history, race
and public policy, social movements, race and literature, arts, etc.
Candidates who received (or will receive) their terminal degree between
August 24, 2019 and August 24, 2021 are eligible to apply. All applicants
should have a demonstrated interest in race, justice and inclusion in
   research, teaching and service.

Postdoctoral Fellows funded under this program will be appointed for two
years contingent on a successful annual review. Fellows will teach at least
one course per year; specific teaching assignments will depend on the
department and the appropriateness to the professional development goals.
These are 12-month appointments. In addition to salary and benefits, which
include health care and retirement contributions, the program will provide
a research allocation for each Fellow. Fellows will receive career
mentorship and will participate in professional development programs with
the aim of preparing them for faculty careers in academia.
