POSITION TITLE: Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer (VPRTT)
PAY RANGE: $216,000 - $286,000

THE OPPORTUNITY: As the senior research officer of the university, the
VPRTT represents Mines in national and international discussions on
emerging research opportunities and works to establish collaborative
research partnerships that ultimately diversify external funding sources
and increase the local, national, and international visibility and
reputation of Mines. The VPRTT also works closely with the research
leadership of regional universities and national laboratories to develop
and sustain partnerships and to ensure that Mines faculty and their
research activities are appropriately recognized, respected and engaged
across the state and region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Initiates, integrates, enhances, and grows research activities across
Mines. Priorities include identifying and pursuing strategic research
thrusts, developing and implementing a vision for thematic
interdisciplinary institutes, expanding external and interdisciplinary
collaborations, growing and diversifying external funding, and increasing
external visibility and impact of the output from the Mines’ research
enterprise. The latter includes growth and promotion of Mines’ intellectual
property portfolio to accelerate societal benefits from Mines research
results that catalyze future innovation.

2.  Leads the Office of Research and Technology Transfer (ORTT), which
supports strategic research initiatives, including interdisciplinary
research centers and institutes, and the pursuit of large
multi-investigator and multi-institution funding opportunities. Directs the
ORTT to identify funding opportunities, manage research compliance, and
connect to other university groups, including contracts and grant
administration.   Exercises sound fiscal judgment and management of funds.

3.  Works closely with the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) and Academic
Affairs (AA) to integrate research, education, and entrepreneurship at the
graduate and undergraduate levels with the goal of creating an environment
that fosters creativity and excellence in both research and scholarly
activities conducted by students and faculty.

4.  Maintains engagement in the research and education missions of the
university by cultivating, maintaining and nurturing existing research
efforts and relationships.

5.  Fosters and sustains connections with state and federal lobbyists,
agencies and national laboratories to preserve current and enable future
funding streams.
