The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of
Waterloo is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in the
remediation of groundwater contaminants to contribute to a SERDP-funded
project that investigates in situ immobilization of PFAS in groundwater by
activated carbon barriers (
https://www.serdp-estcp.org/index.php/Program-Areas/Environmental-Restoration/ER21-1111/ER21-1111/(modified)/21Jan2021).

Research will involve bench-scale experiments to elucidate the fundamental
processes that govern the sorption of PFAS, and the development of a novel
reactive transport model capable of predicting the retention and
breakthrough of PFAS in an AC barrier. A pilot-scale experiment will be
conducted to assess the retention of PFAS under realistic field conditions,
and to benchmark the performance of the reactive transport model. The
Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to lead and coordinate research tasks, and
assist with project reporting requirements. We expect the duration of this
appointment will be approximately 4 years with an anticipated start date of
May 1, 2021. Although not required, experience analyzing PFAS and other
trace contaminants is preferred, and field work knowledge related to
contaminated sites would be an asset. For inquiries, please contact Dr.
Neil Thomson (neil.thomson at uwaterloo.ca) and Dr. Anh Pham (
anh.pham at uwaterloo.ca).
