Ph.D. position in climate extremes, with a focus on heatwaves

Uppsala University, Sweden

There is an opening for a Ph.D. position in my group in Uppsala University.
The preferred start date is September 2021, with flexibility for earlier or
later dates, and the position is for 48 months. Do not hesitate to contact
me (gabriele.messori at geo.uu.se) should you have any questions. Deadline for
applications is currently the *12th April.*

*Further details and application form here: *

https://www.uu.se/en/about-uu/join-us/details/?positionId=378265

Applications over email will not be accepted.

*The position*

The Ph.D. will work within the frame of the ITN grant “european weather
Extremes: DrIvers, Predictability and Impacts”, funded by the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie
Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 956396 and headed by Uppsala
University. You will be part of a leading cohort of early-career
researchers across 9 universities and research centres in Europe, studying
different aspects of climate extremes: from atmospheric dynamics to public
health and agricultural impacts. Through this network you will have access
to a rich programme of training activities and research exchanges. Your
work will focus on mapping key physical processes and large-scale oceanic
and atmospheric configurations modulating the skill and statistics of
heatwave forecasts in present and future climates. This analysis will be
complemented by the use of indicators issued from dynamical systems theory,
which will provide a theoretical picture of the mean predictability
characteristics of the atmosphere. You will also have the opportunity to
engage in teaching and supervising duties. As part of the project, you will
be required to complete international secondments and attend international
meetings, subject to health and travel advisories.

*The research group*

I coordinate a lively research group based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences
in Uppsala, which focuses on the dynamics of extreme climate events in the
mid and high latitudes and their interactions with other components of the
Earth System. I currently head three nationally funded research projects,
an ERC project and a large H2020 consortium. More information on our
ongoing research can be found at *https://gmessori.eu/
<https://gmessori.eu/>*.

*Eligibility*

Eligibility criteria follow the MSCA mobility rules (and the additional
requirements specified in the full job asvertisement:

*The department*

Uppsala University is a comprehensive, research-intensive university with a
strong international standing. The Department of Earth Sciences (
https://www.geo.uu.se/ <https://www.geo.uu.se/?languageId=1>) is one of the
most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on
subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from
submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and
oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.
