Educational Testing Service (ETS) is seeking specialists (e.g. advanced-degree holders/candidates, professional writers, etc.) in a variety of academic fields to supply content-specific test material. This material, which can be submitted in written form or as an audio recording, will be used as the basis for academic lectures that will appear on the Listening Comprehension section of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL is administered to individuals around the world who want to attend an English-medium university. The purpose of the TOEFL is to assess readiness to function in an English-speaking academic environment.

TOEFL Listening Comprehension lectures present academic content appropriate for first-year university students on topics drawn from the social, physical, and life sciences and from the arts. Lectures are approximately 720 words in length (written) or 5-10 minutes audio recorded, and they contain enough information to support six test questions. The lectures and questions provided by freelance writers are used by ETS staff members to develop the actual test content.

Selected candidates will go through a tryout phase, which involves producing their first TOEFL lecture. Producing TOEFL lectures including, among other steps, submission of topic ideas, providing sources, and writing or recording the final lecture. Candidates who have been selected from our pool of applicants are given guidance by ETS staff members to help ensure that their submissions meet TOEFL specifications.

ETS pays $1000 for every accepted lecture submission.

If interested, candidates may send a CV to Mike Gilligan at mgilligan at ets.org by Friday, April 16. It may take our team up to 4 weeks to respond after we receive your materials.

Thank you for your interest in working with Educational Testing Service on the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
