Position Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Scientist with a demonstrated background in atmospheric remote sensing fundamentals, specifically with radio frequency (RF) technologies.  Are you familiar with how weather radars work and what options we might have for improving their performance?  Do you have a vision for new data products that incorporate weather radar measurements?  This scientist position can be located either in our Boulder office in Louisville, Colorado or at our Boston office in Woburn, Massachusetts.  We offer a position as a key member in our Applied Meteorology team, an applied research team that covers a broad range of weather and environmental measurement technologies coupled with geophysical modeling and machine learning capabilities.  To be successful, you will need to take an active approach working remotely with several product teams across Vaisala's Weather business unit in both Europe and the USA.  Your primary role will be focused on weather radar technology products, but contributions elsewhere will also be welcomed.  Your drive to innovate and ability to work in a team environment are essential characteristics for success.



Your key responsibilities include:
*    To conduct applied research projects; develop, evaluate, and verify technological solutions.
*    Generate project proposals based on input from the weather radar business area; identify technology development needs.
*    Document research-related outcomes through project reports, white papers, and articles.
*    Provide consultation for demanding engineering tasks that require deep scientific or technology understanding.
*    Assist in product development and engineering tasks in support of new product launches and ensure that such products are effectively maintained and improved.
*    Connect with US university groups and serve as a point of contact for sponsored research projects and co-op programs on weather radar topics; represent Vaisala in the global radar science community.



Required Qualifications:
*    Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience in industrial or academic research environments, with  background in at least one of: digital signal processing, atmospheric physics, remote sensing, or data science.
*    M.S. or equivalent degree and 3 years of experience is preferred.
*    Proficiency in Python or Java  in Linux-based environments is required.  Capability to contribute to the software designs associated with weather radar signal processing and downstream analytics.
*    Proven track record of successfully seeing projects through from start to finish.
*    Good international communication skills with ability to present research results to non-expert audiences.
*    Ability to travel occasionally, sometimes internationally.



Desired Qualifications:
*    Knowledge of RF technologies, especially weather radar transmitter and receiver designs. Capability to contribute to the hardware designs associated with weather radar signal processing.
*    Previous hands-on experience with electronics and antennas.
*    C/C++ fluency and experience in version control software, other programming languages and tools are a bonus.
*    Cloud computing experience in Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure.
*    Passion to be innovative and come up with novel solutions.
