1. Postdoctoral researcher in atmospheric modeling

Earliest start date: 1 August 2021
Duration: 3 years
Percentage time: 80-100%
Place of work: Lausanne, Mouline (Géopolis), Switzerland

We invite applications for a 3-year post-doctoral position at the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDyST) at the University of Lausanne, focussing on atmosphere and climate modeling with applications to dynamical atmospheric variability and interactions in the climate system.

*Position summary:

The successful candidate will join the newly launched research group “Atmospheric Processes” led by Prof. Domeisen and will work closely with the Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) in Zurich. The aim of the project is to advance the modelling capabilities in weather and climate modelling that allow for the simulation of interactions of the atmosphere within the climate system, with a focus on the analysis and predictability of extreme events.

The candidate will pursue their projects making use of the high-performance computing capabilities at UniL and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) and contribute to installing, running, and developing numerical models of the atmosphere. In addition, there will be opportunities to maintain and contribute to research projects in the areas of atmospheric dynamics, teleconnections, extreme events and their impacts, and/or predictability.

*Candidate qualifications:

· PhD degree in atmospheric / climate science, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related domain.
· Motivated to advance the research and modeling of the climate system.
· Strong background in climate modeling, system administration, and excellent programming skills. Experience with hierarchical / modular model setups is a plus.
· Fluent in written and spoken English. French is an asset, but not required for the position.

*Description of responsibilities:

· Build numerical modeling capability and contribute to advancing model development
· Disseminate results through scientific publications and conferences
· Actively work with local and international collaborators and technical staff
· Contribute to an inclusive research environment

*Your application: We look forward to receiving your online application in PDF format including the following documents:

· Cover letter
· Research statement (max 1 page)
· Curriculum vitae including list of relevant scientific publications
· Copy of relevant university degree certificates
· Contact information for two professional references

In your research statement please specify your interest for this position and outline which tools you have experience with that are applicable for the proposed role, and any previous experience you have working on these or related topics.

*Contact: Questions regarding the position can be directed by email to Prof. Domeisen (daniela.domeisen at env.ethz.ch).

*Application deadline: Applications submitted until 28 June 2021 will receive full consideration.
