to
help analyze and model NASA and NOAA Fire Influence on Regional to Global
Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) measurements.
While the deadline for the job posting has passed, the position is still
open. If you're interested, please apply as soon as possible.
*Position Information*
We seek a motivated and passionate Postdoctoral research associate who will
investigate the complex energetics and emissions processes in wildfires and
other types of biomass burning, to contribute effectively toward the
reduction of current large fire-emissions uncertainties and the advancement
of associated environmental and climate research and applications. The
successful candidate will be expected to participate in field
studies/campaigns and calibrate and operate a variety of scientific
instrumentation to collect relevant measurements from ground-based and
airborne platforms, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). He/she will
process and analyze new and existing measurements in conjunction with
satellite observations, derive fire emissions of aerosols (e.g., black
carbon and organic carbon) and trace gases (e.g., CO2, CO, CH4) from fire
radiative power (FRP) and other parameters, play a leading role in the
development of the next version of the NASA fire energetics and emissions
research (FEER) products (https://feer.gsfc.nasa.gov), and assimilate the
resulting emissions products into a suitable high-resolution mesoscale
model, such as the weather research and forecasting model coupled with
chemistry (WRF-Chem) and/or the community multiscale air quality (CMAQ)
model. Also, he/she will be expected to study the interactions of
vegetation fires and their emissions with micro- and mesoscale
meteorological processes and related impacts on atmospheric composition,
air quality, and the water cycle, primarily, in North America and northern
sub-Saharan Africa, but also in other parts of the world where similar
studies may be necessitated.
*Responsibilities:*
• Conduct innovative research on fire energetics and emissions
using observations collected during the NASA/NOAA/Community 2019 FIREX-AQ
field campaign synergistically with corresponding satellite observations.
• Perform quality control on FRP and flaming/smoldering fire
products from the NASA MASTER airborne instrument and extend the results to
develop/assess similar products from some other airborne (e.g., eMAS) and
satellite (e.g., VIIRS, MODIS) instruments.
• Conduct small-scale fire experiments using visible/infrared
imagers/spectrometers and other sensors aboard UAS and participate in
larger field campaigns involving the use of UAS or manned aircraft to
collect relevant measurements and develop/adapt algorithms for retrieving
FRP and other quantitative variables from such measurements.
• Utilize lessons learned from the integration of
multi-airborne and multi-satellite fire analysis for fire emissions to
develop a prototype of speciated emissions algorithm for FEER version 2.0
(currently at version 1.0).
• Prepare fire emissions products for ingestion/assimilation
into WRF-Chem/CMAQ or similar models, and conduct relevant model simulation
experiments to evaluate their efficacy/performance at forecasting
fire/smoke influence on atmospheric pollution.
• Collaborate on additional research projects within the
atmospheric science research group at Howard University and across the
broader scientific community.
• Disseminate research results to the community via data
curation and publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at
scientific conferences, workshops, and seminars.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate research students
performing data analysis, modeling, and data assimilation projects.
*Position Requirements*
• A recent Ph.D. in Earth/Environmental/Atmospheric science or
related field.
• Experience with field/airborne studies of wildfires and/or
prescribed biomass burning, instrument operation, and related data
collection/processing/analysis/assimilation and modeling.
• Advanced scientific programing skills and experience with
algorithm development and data analysis.
• Experience with data mining and fusion of large datasets from
various observational systems and platforms.
• Knowledge of the planetary boundary layer thermodynamics and
land/atmosphere interaction processes.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and
ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
• Eligibility to work in the US.
*Length of Postdoctoral Fellowship*
One year, with potential of renewal to a second year based on performance
and availability of funding.
*Work Location*
Howard University, Beltsville Campus (HUBC), Maryland.
*Expected Start Date*
July but no later than August 1, 2021
*Application Deadline*
June 30, 2021. Review of applications begins June 15, 2021, and continues
until position is filled.
*Method of Application*
Send resume, cover letter, PDF copies of two most recent related
publications, names and contact information of three references to:
