*Postdoctoral Researcher - Biomineral Capture and Enrichment of Rare Earth
Elements*
A postdoctoral researcher position is available within the Geomicrobiology
group led by Dr. Clara Chan in the Department of Earth Sciences and
Delaware Biotechnology Institute, University of Delaware, Newark DE. The
successful candidate will combine geochemical and microbiological
approaches to develop new mineral- and organic-based biomaterials for rare
earth elements (REE) capture and enrichment, with the aim of recovering
these critical elements from acid mine drainage. The collaborative project
will utilize biominerals and engineered biopolymers to capture REEs, using
biogeochemical processes for inspiration. The ideal candidate will have
experience with isolating and characterizing organisms from natural
environments, (bio)mineral characterization, metal geochemistry, and
adsorption/desorption experiments. Applicants must have a PhD in Earth
Sciences, Microbiology, Environmental Engineering and Science or a related
discipline, and should have a strong record of disseminating results via
peer-reviewed publications and presentations, commensurate with experience.
Applicants should have a desire to work collaboratively within a supportive
group, value outreach efforts, and be self-motivated.
The position is available for 3 years, contingent upon performance and
funding. Our research group, department, and college value diversity and
work to foster an inclusive environment. We strongly encourage applications
from a broad spectrum of candidates, including women and members of
underrepresented minority groups.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, statement of research, CV,
graduate transcript (unofficial transcripts accepted) and names of three
references through the University of Delaware Jobs website. If they have
not yet graduated, applicants should indicate in their cover letter the
date by which they anticipate having their doctoral degree conferred.
Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Clara Chan directly at
cschan at udel.edu to express interest and discuss the opportunity further.
The position is available starting June 2021 and open until filled.
