*Statement of the Job*:

The School of Marine Sciences seeks a faculty member in fisheries science
to join a large and intellectually diverse educational and research
community; the successful candidate will:

   - Have expertise in industry-relevant fisheries science, such as stock
   assessment, population dynamics modeling, or quantitative fisheries science
   - Establish or maintain an internationally-recognized research program,
   which may include developing and using novel quantitative approaches to the
   study of commercially exploited living marine resources
   - Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in marine sciences, including
   the broad area of fisheries science
   - Advise and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral scholars
   - Be a strong liaison between the University of Maine and other UM
   system campuses, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and other relevant
   NGOs in Maine
   - Contribute to state and regional assessments of fish stocks and their
   management
   - Advise government and industry partners on sustainable fisheries
   management
   - Serve the institutions and the profession through work on committees,
   student recruitment, institutional improvement and/or similar contributions



This nine-month (academic year) position will be at the
assistant, associate or professor level, commensurate with experience. The
successful candidate will have a 75% research and 25% teaching commitment
and be based at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine, as
part of a cooperative agreement with the University. The initial teaching
assignment will include an average of 4.5 credits per year, and will
include undergraduate classes in Fisheries Science and a graduate class in

The School of Marine Sciences has vibrant oceanography, marine biology,
aquaculture, and marine policy programs, with faculty and staff based in
Orono, at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, and at the Gulf of Maine
Research Institute in Portland <https://www.gmri.org/>. This position
contributes to the University’s Signature and Emerging Areas of Excellence (
https://umaine.edu/areas/marine-sciences). The successful candidate will
play an important role in a new state-wide, multi-campus graduate program
in Fisheries Science, Management, and Policy, currently in the planning
stages.


*Qualifications*:

*Required:*

   - Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Fisheries Science or a closely
   related field
   - Demonstrated interest and ability to teach fisheries-related courses
   at undergraduate and graduate levels
   - Strong record of research accomplishments, including evidence of an
   extramurally-funded research program and a strong publication record
   - Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students
   - Record of engaging with NGOs, state and federal management agencies
   and industry stakeholders, and working with interdisciplinary teams that
   includes natural and social scientists
