Dear Colleagues,

I would appreciate your help sharing with potential candidates the information below about two postdoc positions at the Leverhulme Center for Climate Change Mitigation in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield, UK

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

Maria

*****
Two postdoctoral Research Associates in Atmosphere-Biosphere-Climate interactions.

These posts are fixed term for 2 years, renewable for 2 more years based on performance.

We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences for two Research Associates in atmosphere-biosphere-climate interactions. These positions are part of a 4-year project (“The Net-Zero Emissions Challenge: Quantifying unintended climate feedbacks from large-scale deployment of land-based CO2 removal strategies” ) supported by a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship.

You will join the research group of Dr Maria Val Martin at the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation (LC3M) and work in close collaboration with colleagues at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR, Colorado, US), the MetOffice and BEIS. We aim to investigate the extent to which land-based CO2 removal (CDR) strategies can help mitigate climate change and meet targets set in the Paris Agreement on Climate and Net Zero Strategies. In this project, you will explore the large-scale deployment of one or more of the following strategies: afforestation/reforestation, wetland/peatland restoration, bioenergy crops and enhanced weathering, using a combination of Earth System Models and earth observations.

You should have a PhD in atmospheric, climate sciences or a related field and experience in atmosphere-biosphere-climate interactions research. You should demonstrate ability to design and run model simulations with Earth System Models (eg, CESM, UK-ESM) or land models (eg, CLM5, CTSM, JULES) on high-performance computing systems, and analyze large earth model datasets and observations. You should also have proficiency with one or more programming languages (eg, Python, R, Matlab, Fortran). You should have excellent written and oral communication skills and an established publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Training will be provided where necessary and the project represents an ideal opportunity to expand your technical expertise in these areas. You will be responsible for your own research program but will need to work with other team members to ensure the project objectives and milestones are met in a timely manner.
